September is injury month.
September was supposedly one of the biggest months in the world of boxing. Five high profile fights are already lined up namely the Vargas-Mayorga bout, Juan Manuel Marquez-Rocky Juarez, Vitali Klitschko-Jameel McCline, Chad Dawson-Adrian Diaconu and Jermain Taylor-Kelly Pavlik championship fight. Unfortunately, four of the mega fights were cancelled and moved to a later date. The Vargas-Mayorga match would have been an entertaining scrap. Both guys really hate each other as was evidenced in one of their prefight press conferences. Both men had a scuffle with Vargas landing several punches to Mayorga's face. Things were really heating up but with just less than 2 weeks from the scheduled fight, Vargas was struck down with anemia. The doctors told him no to fight on the supposed date forcing the promoters to move the bout to November 8.Then we have the Juan Manuel Marquez-Rocky Juarez match. The card co-promoted by rival promoters Golden Boy and Top Rank. The HBO was hyping this fight because not only is the main event potentially good, the undercard fights were also wonderfully stacked. IBF featherweight champ was set to defend his title against Marton Honorio. Former superfeatherweight champion and Contender 2 runner up Steve Forbes is scheduled to face tough welterweight Panchito Bojado. Lastly, Contender season 1 champion Sergio Mora was supposed to fight former junior middlewieght champ Kassim Ouma. Even Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard proposed a bet if their respective fighters lose, the loser will be a ring card girl (or a man) in the main event. Too bad things Marquez got injured with just a week before the fight. He had an infection in his right hand prompting Golden Boy Promotions to postpone the fight. Luckily for boxing fans, ESPN picked up the Mora-Ouma on October 16. Showtime will handle the TV broadcast of the Marquez-Juarez fight and should thank HBO for hyping the fight. The match will be shown on November 23 along with the Forbes-Bojado and Guerro-Honorio in the undercard. The 3rd mega fight to be called off would be the Klitschko-McCline heavyweight fight this coming Saturday in Germany. Just a preparations in Vitaly's training camp were going smoothly, he aggravated a back injury and required quick surgery. This is kind of frustrating since Vit Klit was also the reason why Oleg Maskaev's title defense against Sam Peter moved a couple of times and also the 5th straight time he had to cancel a fight. Andrew Golota was also scheduled to face Mike Tyson conqueror Kevin McBride in the undercard. McCline will now fight Vit's sparring partner Davaryll Williamson.Another victim of an unfortunate injury is Adrian Diaconu. He was set to challenge WBC Lightheavyweight champion Chad Dawson on the 29th but he injured his wrist. The whole fight card was not canceled because the promoters found a quick replacement in Epifanio Mendoza. Expect Dawson to win again by a wide UD or late TKO but Mendoza is no pushover.Boxing fans still have the Taylor-Pavlik Middleweight fight to watch and the Contender Season 3 to momentarily quench their boxing fight thirst. I hope Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik would provide some quality fight for us boxing enthusiasts.
